Malta Freeport teams up with Birzebbuga Primary School

Powering the new generation .… Local school children from the seaside village of Birzebbuga in Malta were all smiles as they witnessed first-hand an operational LNG-powered container ship at #MaltaFreeportTerminals in one of the initiatives held by the Freeport to mark World Environment Day 2022. During their visit, held in collaboration with Malta Freeport Corporation and Birzebbuga Local Council, students were shown a video about the facility which was specifically produced for this occasion with a younger audience in mind. The children were able to appreciate the benefits of the Freeport’s operations and gained a better understanding of the measures taken in recent years to minimise the Terminals’ impact on the neighbourhood.

For example, they learnt that LNG vessels emit 25% less CO2 than fuel powered systems, emit 99% less sulphur oxide, save 92% in nitrogen oxide emissions and reduce by 91% the emissions of fine particles. The students were also given the opportunity to use their creativity to create colourful artwork related to the facility and LNG vessels which has now been displayed in the Freeport Centre’s foyer. The children were also each given a memento while the local primary school was given a poster printed on canvas depicting the LNG vessels calling at Malta Freeport Terminals. The Freeport looks forward to organising more visits during the course of the next scholastic year.
