Malta Freeport Terminals has deployed a temporary protective boom outside Birżebbuġa’s Pretty Bay as a precautionary measure after a significant amount of oil residue was observed at the end of the terminal’s basin. This incident happened earlier today when Freeport employees noticed rainbow-coloured oil slick near Terminal One. Transport Malta is investigating the cause and the Freeport took the decision to deploy the boom.
This lightweight rapid response boom — a €30,000 investment by the Freeport last year — stops the oil spill from spreading beyond the Freeport waters. It will remain in place until the spill is cleared.
